Big Cypress National Preserve, Mitchell’s Landing Campground
Located 50 miles from Miami and 75 miles from Naples, Mitchell Landing Campground is one of several in Big Cypress National Preserve in south Florida. This small campground offers 11 campsites that can accommodate tents and RVs in an isolated location off US Highway 41. The campground is surrounded by a wilderness that is home to alligators, turtles, black bears, and panthers, plus myriad aquatic birds like cranes and egrets, and even the colorful tree snail. There are also multiple hiking trails nearby. The campground does have some bear boxes for food storage for those not staying in RVs.
The first three numbered sites, which are not shown in the tour, are home to the camp hosts, while the remaining sites are in two bunches. The first grouping is sites #4 – 6 near the west side. They would make a nice cluster for those wishing to camp in a group.
Campsite #9 is no longer used for camping but provides a picnic table for those wishing to enjoy a day visiting the campground.
Some sites are more isolated and covered than others while some share a spacious exposed field with no discernible boundaries from one site to the other.
There are two restrooms with pit toilets, one on the west side and one on the east. There is no water service or showers.
The remoteness of the location precludes easy access to food or indoor entertainment, so come prepared. Nearby attractions include many opportunities for airboat rides and viewing of wildlife. Alligators are plentiful and easily observed along the adjacent Loop Road scenic drive.
There is no Wi-Fi or T-Mobile service, but there is a strong Verizon signal in the area. Other providers were not measured.
Mitchell’s Landing is available for booking from August to April during the Florida dry season. On occasion, the campground may close for controlled burns in the area.
